When Hurricane Ida hit in August 2021, hundreds of Quest Diagnostics employees were affected.

Over 250 applied for a grant from Quest Diagnostics’ Employee Relief Fund, an internal fund for employees impacted by a federally-declared disaster.

By coincidence, that month the Executive HR Leadership Team at Quest Diagnostics was in the middle of a six-week campaign to raise money for the Employee Relief Fund using Charity Miles.

It was Quest Diagnostics’ first pilot run of Charity Miles, and they found that team members were enthusiastic about “raising money to support our colleagues,” says Nicole Komissar of Quest Diagnostics.

The team’s goal was $5,000, but they exceeded it quickly and raised $7,500 for their colleagues affected by Hurricane Ida and other disasters.

“There was a lot of engagement,” says Nicole. Employees were “overall very enthusiastic about using the app.”

Quest Diagnostics ran a second pilot in October for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, this time opening it to 4,000 employees instead of a single team. They chose to support the American Cancer Society (ACS) because “we have a pretty significant oncology department, with a long relationship with ACS,” says Nicole. “It’s an area that’s close to our business.”

Employees enjoyed the chance to “give back to causes important to them and the business, without having to make a donation out of their own pocket,” says Lindsey Greenberger, the director of Corporate Responsibility and ESG who worked with Nicole on the pilots.

It was also a “great opportunity to get employees active and moving,” adds Nicole.

“Being a healthcare company, we have an ongoing focus on the health and wellness of our employees,” says Lindsey. “With a lot of corporate functions being remote, we wanted to encourage people to get up and get outside.”

For Quest Diagnostics, that makes Charity Miles an “interesting platform to use, especially during this past year and a half where people aren't getting out and volunteering in the same way as the past,” continues Lindsey.

Congratulations to the Quest Diagnostics teams on exceeding their goal and supporting two important causes! We can’t wait to see what you do next.
