This week’s Charity Miles Champion is Kim Frum. She’s a Hogwarts Running Club Member with a big heart. See how she got started on her journey to #somuchgood.
My name is Kim Frum, and I started running in the summer of 2005. I was training for my first 5K in Gettysburg. The odd thing is I really hated running, but I like Gettysburg, and it seemed like an interesting way to tour the battlefield and see the monuments. The next thing I know, I’m training for and running my first half marathon at Walt Disney World in 2006.
Since then, I’ve run numerous races (in real life and virtual races), had four knee surgeries, encouraged others to run, and joined a running club. Considering I hated running, I think I’ve done pretty well. I’m never the fastest nor will I ever win. But I’m out there with thousands of others, making friends, and having a good time.
Official races usually have some sort of charity associated with them, and part of your entry fee goes to that particular charity. I first heard about Charity Miles when I saw a post from a friend on Facebook. He is a biker, and every weekend, he shares his mileage via the Charity Miles app on his Facebook page. I was curious so I looked into what the heck is this CM thing. Quite frankly, it sounded too good to be true. I was interested in trying it out, but life got in the way, and I completely forgot about it.
Fast forward to July 2016. I joined the Hogwarts Running Club (yes, Harry Potter-themed running club) and discovered that they use Charity Miles to log their runs. The club is all about raising money for a good cause. For each race, they organize, the money raised from entry fees and T-shirts goes to a different charity. The individual races along with using Charity Miles on a daily basis, and we have thousands of people in one club doing #somuchgood on a daily basis.
I don’t always have funds available to enter races or donate directly to a charity. But by using Charity Miles, all I have to do is pick from one of the many organizations and go run, walk, bike, or just move, and I can help raise money. My favorite charities are the ASPCA, World Wildlife Fund, The Nature Conservancy, and the National Park Foundation. I rotate through them every time I open the Charity Miles app. From time to time, a friend asks if I could do miles for one of their charities, and I’m glad to help out.
Running was a way for me to stay healthy, exercise, and, from time to time, earn a little racing bling. But now it’s much more than that. It’s a way for me to help others. As one person, I could only afford to donate funds a little at a time. But combining my activities with everyone else using Charity Miles results in a significant amount of money being donated toward a good cause. I can sleep at night knowing that I am helping in my own small way to make this world a better place.
