Chris Oliver and Kyle Schmidt like to go above and beyond.

When UnitedLex, the company they work for, announced that they were partnering with Charity Miles to donate to charity for every mile an employee walked, ran, or biked, Chris and Kyle decided to raise as much money as they could — by signing up for a 59-mile gravel bike race.

“It’s exactly what it sounds like,” says Chris. “Road cycling, but on gravel and dirt roads instead of tarmac and pavement… Not knowing what to expect, our goal for the day was simply to finish the race. Given we both survived, plus raised some money for an incredibly worthy cause, the day was a complete success!”

Chris and Kyle weren’t alone in giving their all to raise money for charity. UnitedLex, an international technology, and legal service company, held two Choose Upward! Charity Challenges in 2020, and hundreds of their employees logged tens of thousands of miles.

In October, the team raised over $30,000 for TRIBE Freedom Foundation, a UK organization fighting to end human trafficking and modern slavery. And in November, the team raised over $8,000 in just two weeks for Spreading Smiles Gyan Kendra, a school right outside their offices in Gurgaon, India.

“As a global organization, we strive to have a global impact with the charities we support,” wrote UnitedLex. “Our goal is to raise awareness among our team members and band together to have a meaningful impact within the communities we operate in around the globe.”

The challenges benefited UnitedLex employees too, in addition to the important organizations they supported, by bringing them closer together during the difficult early months of the pandemic.

“Fostering a supportive corporate culture can be difficult in international companies,” wrote UnitedLex. “However, with most of the teams working remotely [in 2020], even local team members were experiencing difficulties staying connected.”

The Charity Miles challenges were a way to support employee wellness during that difficult time. UnitedLex believes that “when people can focus on their wellness and on giving back, they are generally happier and more engaged in every aspect of their lives, including work.”

To encourage even more engagement, UnitedLex held mini challenges during the large ones, including a 5K Kickoff Challenge and a Weekend Run/Bike Challenge. They also encouraged walking meetings and invited employees to share photos of their walks on the company chats.

Congratulations to the UnitedLex team for their achievements in supporting two such amazing causes. (And extra congrats to Chris and Kyle for that race!) #EveryMileMatters
