A few years ago, RWC started a September challenge to get employees up and moving for a positive cause.

Using the Charity Miles app, they encourage people to “get together, get up, get moving, and work towards a common goal,” says Lora Schmidt, one of RWC’s global admins.

For RWC, a plumbing manufacturing company, that common goal is always Plumbers Without Borders, “which is a charity that we believe closely aligns with our mission and values,” Lora explains. “Clean water and sanitation is something that’s very important to us, just like it is to them.”

At this year’s “Step Up with Charity Miles and Plumbers Without Borders” challenge, the team raised an incredible $45,718, significantly exceeding their goal of $30,000.

How did they accomplish that?

With the pandemic this year, it was a little more challenging to get people registered, admits Lora, “just because when you’re working remotely there’s so much going on. People wonder, do I have time for this?”

But participation grew like a snowball, she says.

Just like every year, “we communicated it out and we got our employees excited to participate.

“When you break it down, it’s easy. You earn money for charity by walking your dog or going outside. It caught on and we were super excited to have nearly 200 people participate worldwide.”

Employees always enjoy the challenge.

“We have a very competitive group of individuals at RWC,” laughs Lora. They look at the leaderboards frequently and fuel a lively competition.

“On the personal front, it has a great impact on employees as well,” Lora adds.

Some employees have said they were “excited and grateful” that the challenge helped them get healthier. “Other people have talked about how their spouses really enjoyed this challenge because it meant quality time together on evening walks,” shares Lora.

Overall, Lora says, “we’re just grateful that there is an app out there that can promote health and wellness while working towards a positive goal.”

We’re grateful to have the RWC as part of our Charity Miles community as well. Congratulations on blazing past your goal this year, RWC! We can’t wait to see you again next September.
