What’s your favorite way to stay active? Running

What charities do you like to support with Charity Miles? The Wounded Warrior Project, Autism Speaks, ASPCA, and Red, I think I’ve chosen almost all of them.

Where is your favorite place to walk, run or bike? Anywhere outdoors, but my favorite place to run so far has been San Diego.

Where is one place you’d most like to walk, run, or bike? I would love to run in Yellowstone National Park, or maybe the Grand Canyon. Any place with majestic nature.

What do you do to help your family/community get active?  I started bringing my 10-year-old son with me to the track to run.  My wife joins sometimes, and we’ve encouraged most of our friends, and family to be active as well.  I am also part of a health-conscious group of runners on Instagram, that motivate each other daily to stay focused and maintain our well-being. I’ve helped 2 people reverse their type 2 diabetes. I teach them clean eating, and most of all running.

Do you have any tips for others on how to take steps toward improving their well-being? Just get out there and give it a try.  I couldn’t even run a mile in high school, and now at age 36, I’ve run over 100 miles a month. Try a fitness tracker. I use the Nike fuel band, and I gotta say it worked for me.  The myfitnesspal app is also a great tool in keeping a food diary, and keeping you accountable.  As for exercise you just gotta find something you can enjoy, and not get bored of. Fitness videos get boring, the gym can be just as boring. The outdoors never gets boring, in my opinion at least.

What are your health/fitness goals? To keep diabetes at bay, and to one day run an ultra marathon.

Are you training for anything? Im training to keep diabetes at bay, and never have to rely on 3 medications a day to maintain a sedentary lifestyle.

What’s one thing Humana can do to help you live a healthier lifestyle? I believe this charity miles app is pretty much amazing.  If more active people knew about it I'm sure they would all use it.

Humana believes that everyone has a unique health and well-being story. What is yours?  I’ve never really been health-conscious, or active, at all.  In 2011, I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, as well as high cholesterol. I was getting very lethargic, and would pretty much eat anything I please without thinking twice. I was relying on 3 different medications, just so I could maintain this slow death sedentary lifestyle. In 2014 I finally decided to change my life. I began eating right and working out every day. Whether it was videos, dancing with my kids, or walking the dog an extra 10 minutes.  It all adds up, and doing something is always better than nothing. I decided to give running a try when the videos got boring, and I needed something new to spark up the motivation from doing the same old routines.  I found that when I ran I got better almost every single day/run.  The next time I would run, I would either get faster or be able to go longer. Not to mention the immediate weight loss. I lost 45 lbs in less than 5 months, and my blood test showed I had reversed all 3 of my ailments. My doctor was very impressed but insisted I continue to take the 3 medications.  I did my own test and stopped all the medications, but continued to eat right and run. (I don't recommend this for everyone, but I pretty much started to learn how my body spoke to me) My next bloodwork showed the same fantastic results, and from then on I’ve become a new person.
