Ware Malcomb: Designed with Care

Established in 1972, Ware Malcomb is a contemporary full-service design firm providing professional architecture, planning, interior design, civil engineering, branding, and building measurement services to corporate, commercial/residential developer and public/institutional clients throughout the world. With office locations throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico, the firm specializes in the design and renovation of commercial properties and facilities in numerous sectors. Among other accolades, Ware Malcomb is recognized as an Inc. 5000 fastest-growing private company and a “Hot Firm” and “Best Firm to Work For” by Zweig Group.

The Challenge

Ware Malcomb has spent decades building a positive company cultured that puts people first. The firm believes that prioritizing wellness influences team members to make healthier lifestyle decisions and leads to a higher quality of life. Part of the member wellness program includes community and philanthropy activities across their 23 locations, encouraging participation in charity walks, fundraisers, volunteering, team building, and community involvement. In the firm’s own words, the community has supported the company for nearly half a century, which is why giving back is a priority.

In addition to a rich and dynamic history of giving back, the firm’s Culture Designed to Care program helps put the local communities into focus. The program expands and strengthens Ware Malcomb’s support of local charities as well as a companywide campaign supporting United Way. To ensure a continued impact in small- and large-scale philanthropy, the firm was looking for a solution that could be applied to both.

Ditching the Desk

Ware Malcomb started using Charity Miles for two one-month long step challenges to support each office’s local United Way. It was a great opportunity to combine to firm’s passion for wellness and giving back. The activity committee named the initiative “Ditch the Desk for Charity” and came up with different ways to engage team members across different locations. Eight regional teams were created to inspire some healthy competition and cross-office interaction. The activity committee encouraged team members to share photos of their mile-logging adventures with weekly photo themes. The top individual and regional team fundraisers received bragging rights and a Ware Malcomb-branded top fundraiser digital award.

The combined results of both challenges proved these initiatives were successful. A total of 390 team members logged over 23,000 miles and raised close to $15,000 with the company sponsorship. Charity Miles helped bring Ware Malcomb closer together as a team to accomplish the goal of raising funds for charity while contributing to employee health and wellness. Not least, the program helped unify the team during a time when employees were not physically able to be spend time together due to the pandemic.
